Developmental Screenings

This is first step in getting your child ready for school and becoming familiar with your child’s developmental milestones.

Developmental screenings offer an opportunity to gauge your child’s current abilities in various areas such as communication, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, problem-solving, personal-social and social-emotional. Developmental Milestones describe how a child should be growing and learning within these areas at different stages of their life.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be screened at 9, 18, 24, and 30 months of age and every year after to ensure that their development is on track. Screenings also help families determine what additional resources or referrals for services are needed (if any).

Cape Henlopen School District offers access to free developmental screenings in both English and Spanish to all District families with children ages birth to 5 years old. This screening is available for all children in public and private preschools, as well as family and center-based child cares, and even those who are not in care outside the home.

Families who participate will receive the following:

• Free Developmental Screening and results.
• Free information describing age appropriate activities for home.
• Free information about developmental milestones.

Developmental Milestones are defined as things that most children can do by a certain age.
